Cali Rose K., senior at Lincoln High School, Portland Oregon

“I never thought an online course could make my mind work as it would in an in-person workshop, but it really does. This program makes writing feel more accessible…”

Who Am I? The Course for high school juniors and seniors

Who Am I? The Course will empower students to write two college or scholarship application essays and maintain the skills for writing wherever they go. With 18 lessons designed to be completed over six weeks, each contains a video, several exercises, and weekly quizzes.

What her students say

“I know this sounds like a lie, but I learned from and enjoyed every single activity . . . You were the best teacher I had.”

—Andrés A.

The college essay writing process is incredibly daunting, and so having that support from the writing course meant so much to me. It helped me learn how to voice my thoughts and word them in a way that made sense. The course also focuses on writing skills that are important for the future, such as grammar, mechanics, and formatting. The way the modules are structured really broke down the essay writing process. I am so thankful for Ms. Sebastian and so thankful to be a part of this course! I learned so much from her and the course, and you can really tell all the time, effort, and care Ms. Sebastian put into [it]. —Meghna R.

“Sara’s program is truly incredible. Her lessons are in-depth, consistent, and allows each student to challenge themself. Personally, I can feel myself grow as a writer with each lesson. She has us read essays with granularity, write incredibly prompted quick writes, and the lessons really guide an individual to be in touch with their own emotions. She makes it clear at the very beginning that she is teaching us more than how to strengthen our writing, but also how to nourish our minds, bodies, and spirits. I have very rarely been challenged by a teacher in this way. As a student who spent most of high school through a computer, I can say that this is a refined and perfected way to teach students online. I never thought an online course could make my mind work as it would in an in-person workshop, but it really does. This program makes writing feel more accessible (especially to those who have difficulty finding the motivation to write regularly, cough cough, ME), because you have the freedom to pause the lesson, move around in your space and zone out into your own world without a teacher looming over you…Not only is this program forcing me out of my writing comfort zone, but it is encouraging me to write every day. Sara teaches her students not to fear themselves in their writing and to jump into a poem, essay, prose, etc, without hesitation. In my eyes, that is the most important part.”

Our Story

As the only teacher in the family, Sara Sebastian was asked to help her youngest sister with the college application essay. When Sara sat down with her, she was shocked at the advice given to her sister by others. “Let’s look at the subtext of that idea. Is that the impression you want to give off? Is that really who you are?”

What followed were mentoring and coaching sessions. Her sister was inspired to write three essays, picked her favorite, and was accepted to her first choice university.

A natural born leader and teacher, Sara was awarded teacher of the year at West Sylvan Middle School in Portland Public Schools during her second year as an educator. After six years of teaching, including redesigning the curriculum for 7th, 8th, and 9th grades at Eton School in Mexico City, Sara decided that her favorite subject to teach is English, her favorite subtopic is writing, and her absolute favorite genre is creative non-fiction.

It is her honor to share her life’s passion with you.

In May 2020, Sara launched a weekly writing group for other professionals who have dreams of publishing, some of whom already have.

The current methods for teaching essay writing are dated, but it doesn’t have to be an arduous process. Who Am I? The Course creates a sense of play, encouraging creativity and self-expression. It’s a fresh, young, new take on essay writing.

Sara is more than qualified to do what she is most enthusiastic about: empowering high school students to find confidence in their writing and take actionable steps to complete work, so they can showcase essays they are proud of. This is the college application essay course where students find their voice. Nothing makes her happier than when a student declares, “I am a writer.”
